Joyful Music Studio students were at Lakeland University on Saturday, March 3 for the 2018 Wisconsin Music Teachers Association District Auditions. Students prepare two or three original pieces in different styles and from different historical periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern) and take a written and aural musicianship skills test. They play their pieces before a judge and receive a critique and a score, with 5 points possible per piece. There are also 5 points possible for the musicianship test. In the photo here, Joshua Vincent is showing his comment sheets and musicianship test. Scores from their pieces and test add up to points toward earning awards. It is very exciting to get these back and see how all of the kids did!
I heard lots of comments this year about how the judges were very good- kind, encouraging, and helpful! Sometimes judges take a minute or two to help students and give a few tips on their pieces if there is time, and that's always a wonderful experience because kids get to know that they are not just being "judged" but that the audition is about getting feedback so they can be more successful.
Congratulations to all of the students who worked hard to prepare for auditions this year!! This takes hours of preparation and is hard work. Students who participated were Ellie Abler, Charlotte Bullard, Grace Hammond, Madeleine Hammond, Jillian Knier, Sarah Redell, Jenna Reenders, Addison Schliewe, Mollie Schliewe, Levi Toerpe, Joshua Vincent, Sam Wallace, and Elizabeth Yetzer.
Students in State Track prepared three pieces and need to earn at least 14 out of 15 points on their pieces and at least 4 out of 5 on the musicianship test. Students who qualified for the Badger State Competition this year are Charlotte Bullard, Addison Schliewe, and Joshua Vincent. It will be held on Sunday, May 6 at UW Milwaukee.
Students who earned their 22 point award plaque this year are Jillian Knier and Joshua Vincent. Madeleine Hammond earned her 150 point award. These will be given at the spring recital along with special certificates for all students who participated, and any awards earned after the state competition. Congratulations!
